About Dine out for Greece
Dine Out For Greece is an annual fundraising event which happens on March 25th, Greek Independence Day. This event involves the generous participation of volunteers, corporate sponsors and restaurants. The concept is simple: Restaurants donate a generous percent of their sales to support The Hellenic Initiative (THI), a 501(c)3 whose mission it is to provide crisis relief and economic development to Greece. In turn, THI’s global community comes out, promotes, and fills participating restaurants with diners.
Participating as a guest is even easier: locate a Dine Out For Greece event in a city near you, find a restaurant from the list of participating locations, and on March 25th, Dine Out for Greece.
In seven years, The Hellenic Initiative has raised over $15 million to fund much needed programs in Greece. The best part? You don’t have to be Greek to participate! All you must do, is grab a few friends and eat at one of the restaurants listed here.
All funds raised through a city’s Dine Out For Greece event will be distributed to The Hellenic Initiative and our various vetted charities in Greece.

Greek Independence Day
March 25th is the Greek Independence Day, commemorating the start of the war of Greek Independence in 1821.
Greece was occupied by the Ottoman Empire for 400 years, since 1459. During this time, there were several attempts by Greeks to gain their independence from the Ottomans. In 1814, a secret organization called “Filiki Eteria” was founded with the aim to liberate Greece.
The Greek revolt was precipitated on March 25, 1821, when Bishop Palaion Patron Germanos raised the flag of revolution over the Agia Lavra Monastery in the Peloponnese. The Greeks all over the country followed the rebels by the motto “Freedom or Death”.
Many intellectuals from Europe stood by Greeks during their struggle for freedom and promoted their cause, including the English poet Lord Byron. With the help of the British, French and Russian forces, the Greeks gained their independence in 1829 with the Treaty of Edirne and later with the London Protocol establishing the Greek state.
On the same day as Greek Independence, Greek Orthodox Church celebrates the Annunciation by archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary.
